One of the questions I’m asked most often is whether hiring an adapted motorhome will actually make travelling easier.
It’s a good question, and one that doesn’t have the same answer for everyone.
The honest answer?
It depends.
For some people, an accessible motorhome holiday can provide the freedom, flexibility and independence they’ve been looking for. For others, a hotel, cottage or lodge may be a better fit.
At Adaptive Motorhome Hire, I’d much rather help someone choose the right holiday than encourage them to hire Jessica if she isn’t the right fit. That’s why I always recommend looking at the whole trip, not just the vehicle.
My Honest Advice Before Booking Jessica
Accessible travel isn’t one-size-fits-all. While Jessica offers a range of adaptations designed to support independence and mobility, the most important question is whether the whole holiday experience works for your individual needs.
I’d always rather have an honest conversation before booking than have someone choose a holiday that isn’t the right fit for them.
Why Some People Choose Jessica
One of the biggest benefits of travelling in Jessica is consistency.
If you’ve ever stayed in different hotels during one trip, you’ll know that every room can be completely different. Bed heights change, bathrooms vary, entrances are different, and you often have to work everything out again each time you arrive somewhere new.
With Jessica, your sleeping space, bathroom and living area stay the same throughout your journey.
I personally believe this is one of the things that makes travelling feel less stressful. Once you’re settled in, you don’t have to keep adapting to new surroundings every few days.
For many people, that familiarity makes a huge difference.
Of course, a familiar layout is only useful if it genuinely works for you.
Freedom and Flexibility, With a Little Planning
One of the things we often love about motorhome travel is the freedom to travel at our own pace.
You can stay a little longer somewhere you’re enjoying, avoid rushing from place to place and build your holiday around your own needs and energy levels.
In my experience, the people who enjoy Jessica most are often those who like that sense of flexibility. They enjoy being able to take their time, change plans if they need to and travel in a way that feels comfortable for them.
I always say that flexibility is wonderful, but it works best when it’s backed up by a bit of preparation.
Having a plan doesn’t take away the adventure. It simply helps avoid unnecessary stress when you’re away from home.
Things I’d Recommend Checking Before You Set Off
- Accessible campsites
- Suitable parking
- Overnight stop options
- Driving distances
- Any accessibility information for places you plan to visit
A little preparation usually makes for a far more relaxing holiday as you well know.
Accessible Accommodation Doesn’t Automatically Mean an Accessible Holiday
This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions I’ve come across.
Jessica can provide an accessible place to stay, but she can’t make a restaurant, attraction or visitor destination accessible.
That’s why I always encourage people to look beyond the vehicle and think about the places they’ll actually be spending their time.
Useful Things to Check
- Parking arrangements
- Accessible toilets
- Paths and surfaces
- Attraction accessibility information
- Changing Places facilities, if required
The places you visit are just as important as where you sleep.
Be Honest About the Practical Side
I always like to be upfront about this.
Motorhome holidays can offer a fantastic sense of freedom and independence, but they do come with practical responsibilities too.
Someone will need to:
- Drive the vehicle
- Prepare it for travel
- Manage water and waste systems
- Carry out basic housekeeping tasks
For some people, that’s all part of the adventure.
For others, a holiday is about stepping away from those responsibilities and having everything taken care of.
Neither approach is right or wrong. It’s simply something worth thinking about before you book.
The Adaptations Need to Work for You
Jessica includes a range of accessibility features, including:
- Wheelchair lift access
- Wet-room facilities
- Wheelchair travel anchor systems
- Driving adaptations available through specialist providers, including Lodgesons and Jeff Gosling
But every person living with a disability is different.
Two people who use similar wheelchairs can still have completely different needs when it comes to transfers, support, equipment and space.
That’s why I always encourage people to have a chat with me before booking.
The important question isn’t whether Jessica is adapted.
It’s whether those adaptations and the environment work for you.
The Questions I Usually Ask
- How do you currently manage transfers?
- What equipment do you need to bring?
- Will you be travelling independently or with support?
- Are you planning to tour around or stay mainly in one location?
- What would make this holiday easier than previous trips?
There are no right or wrong answers.
These conversations simply help me understand what you need so we can work out whether Jessica is likely to suit your travel plans and daily routine.
Compare the Whole Holiday
When comparing holiday options, I always encourage people to look at the full picture.
That includes:
- Motorhome hire costs
- Fuel
- Campsite fees
- Local transport
- Collection and return from Kent
- Any additional equipment requirements
- The practical workload involved during the trip
It’s also worth thinking about the value of having your transport, accommodation and accessibility features together in one place.
For some travellers, that convenience is exactly what makes a motorhome holiday worthwhile.
Jessica sleeps two to three people and has a minimum hire period of four nights, which makes her ideal for many short breaks and longer adventures.
For some people, Jessica is the perfect solution.
The goal isn’t simply to hire a motorhome.
The goal is to find the holiday that gives you the most comfort, independence and confidence.
A Personal Note From Me
Every person travels differently.
What works brilliantly for one person may be completely unsuitable for someone else, and that’s perfectly okay.
That’s why I never try to convince people that Jessica is the right choice for everyone.
What I do try to do is help people make informed decisions. Sometimes that leads to a booking. Sometimes it leads to somebody deciding that a hotel, lodge or cottage would suit them better.
Either way, if you’ve got questions, I’m always happy to chat.
If you’re considering Jessica and aren’t quite sure whether she’ll suit your needs, just get in touch. I’d much rather have an honest conversation beforehand and help you work out whether she’s the right fit than have somebody book a holiday that doesn’t quite work for them.
Together, we can work out whether Jessica is the right fit for your next adventure.
